Publication: Scribners Magazine, 1875, NP
Disbound from Scribners Magazine, January 1875, p.293-310, and February 1875, p.394-409, and March 1875, p. 523-537. Complete. Numerous illustrations. Wonderful series of articles giving first-hand descriptions of the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. The three segments have been neatly stapled together by previous owner. Documents Powell’s 1869 expedition, which concluded with a dramatic and starving crew being fed and assisted by Mormon settlers. Powell and his crew emerged from the Grand Canyon exhausted and nearly out of food. They arrived near the mouth of the Virgin River, where they were received by the residents of St. Thomas, a small Mormon farming community. The settlers provided food and aid, nursing the explorers back to health. A scarce work. Very Good.
