Publication: Simon and Schuster, 1940, New York
First edition. The author's first mystery and the first book in the "black" series. Inscribed by the author to his Aunt : "To my darling Aunt Lil / with all my love, / Cornell / New York, 1941." The recipient was Woolrich's mother's sister, Lillian Tarler Garcia, who would at a later date replace his mother as Woolrich's keeper, if only for a brief period, after his mother died. This copy is superbly bound in full leather, with marbled front and rear endpapers, raised bands and the titles stamped in gilt on the spine, and with all page edges in gilt. A handsome copy in fine, bright condition and we wonder, because of the care taken, if this copy could have been specially bound for a gift presentation to a favorite aunt?!
This is a Haycraft/Queen cornerstone title and the basis for the Francois Truffaut directed film of 1968 with the same name and with Jeanne Moreau in the starring role. No one knew who she was, where she came from, or why she had entered their lives. All they knew about her was that she was beautiful and that each time she appeared, a man died a horrible death! An exceptional copy.
