Second edition. Actually the third printing (BTB 50 B) First edition.originally published in 1871. 8vo. Light green cloth, titles and designs stamped in gilt on the spine, xii, 13- 291 pp., frontispiece [portrait], preface, illustrated, plates. The title page and copyright page are reset, and the text printed from the original plates, with the footnote "His horse" appears at the bottom of page 151. There are seven plates in addition to the frontispiece. A well-written account of a fascinating Texas Ranger and hero. J. Frank Dobie called it "the rollickiest and most flavorsome that any American frontiersman has yet inspired." The work is divided into three parts: Wallace as hunter and Indian fighter; Wallace on the Mier Expedition; and Wallace's trip home to Virginia. T. M. Pearce said the portion about the Mier Expedition "stands as the most valuable account of the tragic episode of Texas history." Cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends and corners, else very good, tight copy.
