A stirring report of the first explorer of the Colorado River, Lieutenant Joseph C. Ives. The young engineer was sent by the War Department to find how far north the Colorado River could be navigated and whether it would be practical to open a wagon road linking the river with the Mormon Road to Los Angeles. Ives kept a daily log that was published in his "Report Upon The Colorado River Of The West" Originally published in 1861. This journal has been shortened to make the report available to readers of all ages.
