First edition. 8vo. Blue cloth, gold stamping on spine, 376 pp. frontis. [map showing Stagecoach Routes of the Old Northwest, 1830-1860], preface, foreword, footnotes, teg, illustrated, plates, portraits, index. Basically a study of the 19th century taverns along the stagecoach routes in what today is considered the upper Midwest portion of the U.S. Drawing on newspaper accounts, diaries, letters, and local lore, Cole paints a vivid picture of transportation, hospitality, and daily life in what was then the "Old Northwest" ... including Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and surrounding areas. AHC 53 says, "Cole was the past president of the Wisconsin Historical Society, and spent many years in the collection of the material. Cole printed quite of bit of this material in a series of booklets and brochures in the 1920s and Kellogg helped compile the material when his health declined during production of the book. The accounts are drawn from the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, and Minnesota. The conditions typify life throughout the expanding frontier." Cloth lightly rubbed with a few minor abrasions, small bit of binders glue bleed-through to upper portion of rear pastedown sheet, else very good, unread copy.
