Publication: Oregon Historical Society, 1982, NP

First Edition. Cloth. XI.-301pp. Profusely illustrated throughout, many in color. Historical Introduction & Annotation by Thomas Vaughan. Ethnographic Annotation by Bill Holm. This handsome volume was produced to support a joint exhibition by the Oregon Historical Society and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. When explorers and orders first visited the Pacific Coast of North America they found a rather sophisticated Indian culture willing to trade "Soft Gold", the valuable animal pelts and hides. As part of the trade interaction, European traders also acquired from the Indians "Objects of Unique Artistry". This work presents a photographic history of the objects involved in the development of the trade. An attractive and important record. A fine, bright, tight copy. Dust jacket shows some minor rubbing to the edges.
