Other works by WILL JAMES

Publication: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926, New York

First edition. 8vo. Inscribed on the front free fly leaf to a cowboy poet friend, "To Chuck Haas 'mi amigo' Will James III - '26." Inscribed first editions of "Smoky" are uncommon and desirable, with this one to a noted contemporary and "amigo" of Will James." Original green cloth, titles stamped in black on the front cover and spine and horse head in red on the front cover, xi [3], 310 pp.,preface, numerous illustrations by Will James. The true 1st printing of the First edition with "1926" on the title page and only 3 lines on the copyright page, and a glaring typographical error at the bottom of page 44, with 'hou gt' in place of 'thought.' A Merrill Aristocrat of the Cow Country. Winner of the John H. Newbery Medal for 1927 for best in children's literature. Spine darkened with some professional restoration to the spine ends and front and rear spine channels, lacking the dust jacket but housed in a cloth clamshell case with a leather spine label and the titles stamped in gilt. Overall a good, tight copy. A much read and much loved copy of a difficult title in the first edition.
