A rather detailed history of early settlers of Hood County, Texas. It's divided into 3 parts: Why I Write, Frontier Living, and Indian Troubles. Much firsthand information provided by those who were there, or the personal experiences of Barker himself, describing the practical realities of settling the Hood County area ... primitive homes, food, transportation, roads, schools, farming, neighbors, and the difficulties of establishing a community. Barker's recollections give a picture of how isolated and self-reliant the early settlers were. Barker also recounts encounters and fears involving Native Americans during the frontier period. These accounts include raids, threats, and the settlers' responses. A lengthy inscription on the front free-endpaper says that Randall Rash, President of the Hood County Historical Society made 40-50 copies and distributed them to Members of the Society. Signed by Miles Hart. Some light wear and some tanning to the edges. Very good or better.
