Publication: Rand, McNally & Company, 1893, Chicago & New York

First edition. Cloth, 325pp. + 1 page advertisement, numerous illustrations. Preface by "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Edited by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. A handsome copy of the "true" first edition, with top-edge gilt (teg) and beveled edges to boards. Majors was pioneer in the mail and transportation business in the early west. His firm began the Pony Express and pioneered the overland stage between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean. Information on uncultivated state of Missouri, Mormons, Doniphan's expedition, trapping, Kit Carson, Denver of early days, Kansas City before the war, silver mining, etc. "Majors freighted on his own from 1848 to 1855 and then joined the famous partnership of Russell, Majors, & Waddell. In his early years, Majors traveled the Santa Fe Trail, but the later partnership was noted more for its role in the Utah "war", the Overland Mail, and the Pony Express. Good information on wagon freighting."---Jack Rittenhouse. "An authentic account of varied experiences on the Plains and in the Rockies by the man who inaugurated the famous Pony Express. A much sought after work."---Peter Decker, Soliday Sale 1004. A near fine, bright, attractive copy. Signed by Alexander Majors in 1898, in a very shaky hand, on the half-title page, and protected in a custom slipcase. An important biography of this important contributor to the history of the development of the West!
