Publication: The Friends of Holy Cross Church and The Sarratt Village Hall Trust, 1999, Watford

First edition. 8vo. Signed by le Carre. As new, unread copy in dust jacket. The basis for the book is to raise money for two charities; The Friends of Holy Cross Church for preservation of Sarratt's Holy Cross Church and The Sarratt Village Hall Trust for redevelopment and enlargement of the present village hall. John le Carre using his writer's imagination depicted Sarratt in his books as the fictional location of a training school for spies. Remember The Nursery? He has contributed an interesting short story about why he chose the village as the setting for his British spy school. Interestingly, another short story by the Russian author Mikhail Lyubimov entitled The Adventures of Colonel Karla in Sarratt sees the village as a tranquil rural backwater, where one can enjoy retirement. Also included are six other stories about the village by various authors. Beautifully illustrated in color by Agnes Bantock, Gillian Burrows, and Jan Clutterbuck. An unusual concept being an original example of village enterprise in order to raise funds for two local charities...the le Carre story alone is a classic of its time.
