69pp. Illustrations. Cahrts. Appendix. Map. 30th congress, 2d Session. Rep. Com., No. 295. 8vo, 18pp. Disbound. In 1838, Samuel Colt began manufacturing the world's first mass-produced repeating firearms at Patterson, New Jersey. Among the first of these was a carbine that attracted favorable attention from the U.S. Navy, which purchased 360 for military use. This report largely is a collection of mostly brief testimonies and endorsements of the Colt repeating fire arms. "... with evidence, furnished by distinguished military officers, as to the superiority of this weapon over all others for mounted troops, and find that all who have used them, or seen them used in the late war with Mexico, and elsewhere, are o the opinion that they are the most efficient and economical arms that can be employed in our Indian territory, and on our extended line of frontier." Testimonies comparing the Colt's carbine to the Hall’s carbine declaring that the "Hall's carbine is not only unsafe but dangerous, particularly in the hands of inexperienced men." Light soiling. Very good.
