First edition. 8vo. Senate Executive Document No. 23, 30th Congress, 1st Session. Red cloth, 132 pp., [blank], plus 24 full-page, lithograph plates and a large folding map. Raines page 1 says, "The Canadian valley of Texas was part of the region traversed and described." The report provides much of life among the Indians, plus examination of the country from Fort Leavenworth to Santa Fe with descriptions of flora and fauna, Mexican customs, Mexican ruins, and several pages of Indian nouns and verbs. Rittenhouse 2 says ".... describes his trip from Fort Leavenworth over the SFT via Bent's Fort, his survey of the northern part of New Mexico, and his return trip over the Trail." Former owner's neat, inked name, some minor foxing to a few of the plates, map is in very good condition, interior pages are clean and bright. A solid, very good copy.
