[1], 121, [1] pp. Numerous woodcut-engraved text illustrations, 20 large folding maps bound in at rear. First edition of Schwatka’s great exploration of the Yukon River sponsored by the U.S. Army for assessing the military capacity of the indigenous population. Schwatka sailed north up the Inside Passage with stops in Pyramid Harbor, and the Haines Mission, arrived eventually in Dyea, hired several First Nations people and trekked to what would become Canyon City and eventually crossed Chilkoot Pass in June, 1883. He has included sections on the [Tongass] Cape Fox tribe of the Tlingit, Stickeen, Tlingit, Chilkat, and other Native American tribes. Light crease to front free fly leaf, gilt on spine faded and with minor wear and soiling to foot of spine and foot of front cover. Minor rubbing and wear to corners. Very good.
