The Copper Range Company, along with the Quincy Mining Company and the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company, was one of the big three companies in the Lake Superior copper mining district. The company was founded in 1899 by William A. Paine, also a co-founder of the stock brokerage firm of Paine-Webber. The company operated successfully and survived the Great Depression of the late 1920s and found a new lease on life by shifting in the 1950s away from native copper to the copper chalcolite ot the White Pine operations.
