Prairie Experiences In Handling Cattle And Sheep.

MAJOR W. SHEPHERD

Other works by MAJOR W. SHEPHERD

Publication: Chapman and Hall Limited, 1884, London

First edition. Green cloth, blind stamping with gilt stamping on front and spine. Pastoral scene on front cover, gold stamping on spine, black endpapers, [8] map, 266 pp., plus 40 pp. of advertising, frontis., illustrated, folding map. The author spent most of his time in America traveling through Wyoming, Montana, Washington Territory, California, Nevada, and into Idaho. Cattle, cowboys, round-ups, sheep-driving, herders, and life on the prairie. The author had a mildly optimistic view of the possibilities of the western range based on his travels throughout the western United States in 1882 and 1883. Six Score 97 says, "An Englishman's observations on ranching in America. Shepherd's book added fuel to the cattle boom fever in England when published." Flake 7684a says "Experiences among the Mormons of Utah, p.253-264." Herd 2057 says, "Scarce." Minor wear to spine ends and corners. Uniform dulling to gilt stamping on spine. Very good. This copy differs from other copies that we have offered, in that while the color of the cloth appears to be the same this copy has a 1.5" x 2" diamond shaped imprint gilt stamped in the center of the front cover versus the pictorial imprint on other copies. This copy also lacks the advertisements after page 266, and it has different endpapers. We do not believe this to be a rebound copy... the binding appears to be "original". The text block, including the folding map, frontis, and other illustrations are identical to other copies. A variant binding of this very scarce work. HERD 2057. SIX SCORE 97. HOWES S389. FLAKE 7684a.
