This first edition is not to be confused with the Arthur H. Clark edition that featured a printed label that was pasted over the J. K. Gill imprint information. One of the earliest comprehensive histories of Oregon written by someone who lived through much of the pioneer period. Covers the voyages of Captain Gray into the Columbia River, the Lewis & Clark expedition, the Astor Fur Company, accounts of Alexander Ross and Ross Cox, Pacific Northwest Indians, Northwest legends, the Hudson Bay Company, John McLoughlin, Fort Vancouver, the Wilkes Expedition, the Whitman mission and massacre, the Cayuse War, the establishment of the Provisional Government of Oregon, the growth of agriculture, as well as personal recollections and biographies of many Oregon pioneers. Eberstadt 223 says, "Accounts of most of the great overland movements, including the Hudson's Bay Company, the Missionary movement, the Peoria party, emigration of 1842-1843, etc." An attractive near fine set.
