11" x 16" brown flexible pebbled leather boards containing 234 black and white photographs ranging in size from 2" x 2 3/4" to 5" x 8," glued directly to thick paper stock. The large photographs were taken by Charles Waite. Waite was a California photographer who worked briefly in El Paso, Texas, before moving to Mexico in 1896. He opened a studio in Mexico City that remained in business until he left the country in 1913. His works were published in books, travel magazines, and on post cards. He also worked for several Mexican newspapers, and he documented United States scientific expeditions in Mexico. The images often included scenic Mexican images and the country's native residents. The album records a railway tour of Mexico during 1904-1905. The journey begins at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, then a wedding in Monterrey and then travel via railway for Mexico to include Irapuato, Querétaro, Guanajuato, Ciudad de México, Amecameca, Puebla, Atlixco, Oaxaca, Mitla ruins,Veracruz. Some locations are unidentified. Family and personal photos, images of Mexican street life, the country's architecture, the country’s varied landscapes, themes relating to class and gender, a bullfight, locals, etc. Twenty-four photographs were taken in 1901-1905 by photographer C. B. Waite. The others are undated and unattributed. Waite's photos are toned silver gelatin prints measuring 5" x 8" and signed and titled in the negative.
