Original red cloth complete with Confederate officer in silver and holding a flag with the motto "We are ready to defend it,." titles stamped in gilt on the front cover with spine letters faded, xv, [16] - 280 [3] pp., frontispiece [portrait of the author in uniform at age 16], preface, illustrated. Illustrated by L. T. Dickinson of Chattanooga. From the Preface: "...I had entered the Confederate army when a mere lad, barely sixteen years of age; was in the first battle of the war and in very nearly the last....I had served through the entire war, from the beginning to the end, the first half in Virginia and Maryland, and the last in Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama...." In Tall Cotton 44: "This narrative is especially interesting for its account of the Peninsular campaign." Spine lettering faded, wear to the spine ends and corners, covers bright, overall a very good, serviceable copy.
