First edition. Original green cloth, gilt-stamped with deckled endpapers, v-xii, 500 pp. + v-xi, 486 pp. Frontis portrait in each volume + 15 plates, 27 maps. Preface, lengthy, detailed index. One of the great military careers of the 19th century. A West Point graduate of 1853, Sheridan's career spanned 35 years, ending as a 4-star General. He saw service in Oregon from the mid 1850's to 1861; then went east to serve in the Union Army, emerging a Major General and a famous cavalry officer. Sheridan directed much of the military operations against hostile plains Indians. From the late 1860's through the mid 1880's. A handsome set of this classic military biography. Some light rubbing to the covers and light wear to extremities,.gold gilt is bright especially with the vignette of the horse and rider on the front cover of each volume. A solid very good set.
