To a friend at the War Department, Patton wrote: "I have been detailed to organize and command a Desert Training Area...I should deeply appreciate your sending to me...any and all information, pamphlets, and what-not, you may have on the minutia of desert fighting, to the end that I may duplicate, so far as is practical, the situation which exists in the desert of North Africa."
