Reportedly, le Carre did not like the jacket design and forced a redesign for the second printing and insisted that the complete print of the first printing be shipped for export. A difficult title as the first U.K. edition was exported and not made available for sale in England. Signed by the author on the title page

The Cold War is over and as a result, British spy handler,Tim Cranmer, and his specially groomed double agent, Larry Pettifer, are retired. Tim's new life is in rural England with Emma, his young mistress. When Emma and Larry suddenly disappear, it is thought that they simply ran off together, but they apparently ran off with 30 million pounds of the Russian's money! Cranmer's search for his protege and mistress leads him on a suspenseful journey through England, France and into Russia, while all along eluding his followers.
