Original Photograph of the great Chief and Leader of the Nez Perce Indians, Chief Joseph. Cabinet Card. Photograph: 4" x 5.5". Mount: 4.25" x 6.5". U.S. Geological & Geographical Survey of the Territories. The images produced by the U.S. Department of the Interior for the "Survey" were created circa 1868-1883, and consists primarily of portraits of male delegates to the United States, with occasional images of women and children. The images were created for ethnological portfolios for the Blackmore Museum in Salisbury, England.
A handsome image of Chief Joseph. He led his people on a 1500 mile trek through of the most difficult terrain in the country, trying to evade hundreds of U.S. Army troops. Encumbered by women and children, Chief Joseph fought over a dozen engagements with four army columns, evading capture until their surrender in northern Montana. This important image was issued by "Department Of The Interior. U.S. Geological & Geographical Survey of the Territories. F.V. Hayden, U.S. Geologist, In Charge". (printed across bottom portion of the cabinet card), with central, stylized logo and light, decorative imprint. Joseph is shown from the chest-up, wearing a buttoned shirt and wrapped in a blanket. He looks directly into the camera with a stern face. He wears a white bead necklace rather tightly around his neck, and his hair braided in classic Nez Perce style. Image is clean and sharp with a light sepia-tone. Lightly written in pencil on verso is "Chief 'Joseph' Leader of the Nez Perce War of 1877". A rare and highly desirable image of this important Nez Perce leader!
