Vintage 8" x 10" publicity photograph of Johnny Mack Brown rearing his horse Wheezer by photographer Ray Jones. On verso of the photograph is a stamp crediting Jones as the photographer, a mimeo snipe, and a provenance stamp. From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones, who was born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901. Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s and went on to become the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935. He remained employed there until well into the 1950s. Johnny Mack Brown (1904-1974) was a star college football halfback at the University of Alabama, who after appearing on Wheaties cereal boxes in 1927, was shortly thereafter signed by MGM Studios. From 1927 to 1965 he appeared in over 150 films, primarily westerns, which began with Brown starring in director King Vidor's "Billy the Kid" (1930). From 1930 to 1933 Brown was MGM's highest paid actor. Among some of his other notable films include "The Big Trail" (1930), "Montana Moon" (1930), "The Secret Six" (1931), "The Last Flight" (1931), "The Lone Star Trail" (1943), "The Ghost Rider" (1943), "Forever Yours" (1945), and "Flame of the West" (1945).
