Published only two months after the Union Pacific/Central Pacific railroads were joined at Promontory Summit, this item provides contemporary information on the newly established coast-to-coast route, including distances and fares from American cities and information concerning the territories adjoining the railroad. Offers information on snows, eating houses, the railroad track, equipment used for passenger comfort while traveling, Indians, the scenery, the climate, etc.

The folding map is an especially important component of the publication as it graphically documents the railroad's route and the geography of the newly accessible West.

Graff 598 says "Although authorship is attributed to Mrs. Carrington, the General probably wrote this little guide." This is a rare item and we have had only a few copies over the years.

Covers lightly rubbed, a small tear to the bottom margin of the map, else a very good copy housed in a leatherette clamshell case with titles stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine.
