First Edition. Printed Wrappers. 24pp. Double-column. The Battle of the Big Hole was a major battle in the Nez Perce War. Colonel John Gibbon commanded 200 men, 40 of which were local civilian volunteers .On the morning of August 9, 1877 they attacked the sleeping village of Nez Perce killing many in the initial attack, but under the leadership of Chief Joseph, the Nez Perce rallied, and retook the village area, driving Gibbon's men back across the river, and inflicting numerous casualties; dead and wounded. Twenty-three of Gibbons men were killed and 39 wounded. The Indian casualties were 50-90 killed, many women and children, and 30 wounded. An important battle in the Nez Perce War told by a firsthand participant. A few small scuffs and some light vertical creasing. Very good.
