Two-tone quarter red leather and maroon cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, raised bands, decorated front and rear endpapers, 570 pp., frontispiece (portrait of Howard), introduction, preface, illustrated, plates (ten in color), portraits, facsimiles. Howard records his, "Observations, adventures, and campaigns among the Indians of the great west. He gives details of their life, habits, religion, ceremonies, dress, savage instincts, and customs in peace and war." Howard had many experiences with Indians and he tells of battles at Wounded Knee, Minnesota Sioux uprising, Custer and the Little Big Horn, Also his battle experiences during the Civil War. A tiny closed tear to head of spine, else a fine, bright, tight, clean copy. This is the first copy we have either seen or handled in this attractive deluxe binding and an exceptional copy.
