Publication: Little, Brown and Company, 1942, Boston

First edition. 8vo. Tan cloth with titles stamped in red on the spine, 173 pp. Tipped-in facing the title page is an inked autographed note on Haycox's stationery addressed to Arnold Gates (1914-1993), future notable Lincoln/Civil War scholar. The note says: Portland, Oregon, April 19, 1933, My dear Gates: You are welcome to it. Ernest Haycox, signing large and bold in brown ink. Gates signs the front pastedown sheet, dating it Jamaica, NY, February 13, 1953. The book contains nine tales that were first published in Collier's Magazine between June 1931 and February 1942. Front dust jacket blurb says "Stories of Man-Hunters, Line Riders, Renegades, Indian Fighters and Hoemen Punctuated by the Gunfire of the Old West." A fine, bright, square copy in a bright, fresh dust jacket lightly rubbed at the extremities and with two tiny closed tears at top of rear cover. An all-around terrific copy. Haycox died in 1950 at age 51 and his autograph material is seldom encountered.
