First edition. 8vo. Laid-in to this copy is a clipped ink signature of "James B, Fry, Brevet Major General, U. S. Army." Original brown cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, green front and rear endpapers, 528 pp., plus 2 pages of advertising, preface, map. This book is divided into two parts. Part I covers the inner workings of the Army while Part II covers several important Civil War battles such as Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, plus a chapter entitled "Custer's Defeat by Sitting Bull," which defends Custer's action at the Little Big Horn which Dustin didn't like in his review! A very hard-to-find and important Custeriana item. Bookplate of United States War Office affixed to the front pastedown sheet and two small stamps of the War Department Library dated Nov. 1898 on a fly leaf and on the page containing the Preface. A very good tight copy.
