In March, 1857, in the immediate aftermath of The Spirit Lake Massacre, committed by renegade Sioux Indians led by Ink-pa-du-tah, the home of James B. Thomas was attacked by these Indians, killing his son, and wounding James so severely in the arm that it required amputation to save his life. He also lost a child to the effects of intense cold experienced while fleeing from these Indians. Light staining to the disband edge, else fine.
