First Edition. Original leather. [570]pp. The Massacre of Cheyenne Indians comprises 6+108 pages of Report No. 142., The Report of the Joint Committee On The Conduct Of The War,... "the Committee on the Conduct of the War be required to inquire into and report all the facts connected with the late attack of the third regiment of Colorado Volunteers, under Colonel Chivington, on a village of the Cheyenne tribe of Indians, near Fort Lyon." An important investigation of all matters related to the action between Chivington and these Cheyenne Indians to determine who were the aggressors; whether the campaign was conducted by Chivington according to the recognized rules of civilized warfare; and whether or not it was forced upon the Indians by the whites. The investigation was virtually a court-martial of Chivington and Governor Evans, and reveals in detail the acts of cruelty, barbarity and murder perpetrated upon a body of unoffending Indians. Interestingly, this volume also includes reports related to the development of light-draft iron-clad steam gunboats, as well as the campaigns of Major General W. S. Rosecrans. External and internal cracks to front and rear hinges, but both still holding. Attractive original leather binding.
