First edition thus. 8vo, Black cloth with spine stamped in gilt and color pictorial paper label affixed to the front. Spine ends and corners lightly rubbed, cloth slightly scuffed, former owner's name and “Christmas 1932” in ink on front free endpaper (no portion of the illustration obstructed), else a remarkably clean, bright copy, with contemporaneous publisher’s 6-page promotional leaflet laid in. First "Scribner's Classics" edition and first color-illustrated edition, featuring color plates by the author not included in the 1930 first edition. A fictionalized autobiography by the Newbery Medal-winning author of Smoky. The story of how the young boy went from his cowboy upbringing to become an accomplished artist, James evokes the scenes, people, and customs of the turn-of-the-century American West.
