Publication: Alfred A Knopf, 1997, New York
First edition. 4to. Boards with cloth spine, maps on front and rear endpapers, xix, 250 pp., profusely illustrated, two maps. Preface by Ken Burns. Contributions by Stephen E. Ambrose, William Least Heat-Moon, and Erica Funkhouser. The most notable expedition in U.S. history was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, with soldiers, an African-American slave, a female guide, and Canadian boatmen. Their journey was in hopes of locating the Northwest Passage. The explorers found a varied landscape and a diversity of Indian peoples. This beautifully illustrated work is the companion volume to Ken Burns' PBS documentary film that aired in November, 1997. Handsome and tight first edition of this PBS companion volume. This superb copy bears choice autograph additions on matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards — signatures of two of the television series voiceover stars: Matthew Broderick (born 1962; voices expedition member John Ordway) and Sam Waterston (born 1940; voices Thomas Jefferson). A delightfully unusual copy. Fine in dust jacket.
