Publication: American Publishers' Association, 1891, Chicago

First edition. 8vo. Cloth, titles and decorations stamped in gilt and black on front cover and spine, 319 pp. + i-vi, preface, frontispiece (portrait of the author), illustrated mostly from photographs, portraits, double column, all page edges are marbled. "Profusely illustrated with over two hundred portraits and full-page engravings." The first 208 pages are related to the Choctaws, beginning with a history of the tribe, followed by biographical sketches of 184 leading men in the Choctaw tribe, plus a few of the Cherokee tribe. The last 111 pages focus on the Chickasaw Indians, with a history of the Chickasaw tribe, followed by biographical sketches of 127 prominent members of the Chickasaw tribe. A very scarce and important record; full of history of people and events in the early development of the Indian territory. Most biographical sketches include a portrait. Original cloth is lightly rubbed, spine ends and corners lightly worn with some minor dulling to gilt on spine, front hinge loosened. Gilt stamping on front cover is bright and attractive. Overall a very good copy but still a "collectors" copy of this very scarce work.
