Gibbon's own account of the activities of his column in the 1876 campaign. Gibbon commanded the so-called Montana Column which proceeded from Fort Shaw, north of Helena, to the Yellowstone, then downriver to make contact with Custer and Terry where joint operations against hostile Indians were planned. Arriving 48 hours after the conclusion of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Gibbon gives a first-hand description of the battlefield.
