Publication: Photographed by L A Huffman, n d (ca 1880), Miles City, Montana

Silver gelatin photograph 15 cm x 20 cm [6" x 8"] of Northern Cheyenne Young Plenty Bird. Photographer mark in the negative. Museum mount and matte. Nice contrasts.

A view of Young Plenty Bird with a bow in his left hand and arrows in his right hand as he stands in front of a Teepee with a horse and young woman to the right. Laton Alton Huffman (1854–1931) was born in Iowa and learned the craft of photography from his father. In the summer of 1878 he apprenticed at Moorhead, Minnesota, with the later famous Yellowstone Park photographer F. Jay Haynes. By December 1878 Huffman obtained his first professional appointment as a civilian post photographer at Fort Keogh, Montana Territory, near Miles City. This position gave him his start on what turned out to be a lifetime project, that of photographing eastern Montana and northern Wyoming during the last two decades of the western frontier.

Attractive photograph in fine condition with nice contrasts.
