Two-tone quarter cloth and boards, decoration and titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, xvii [blank], 189 pp., frontispiece [portrait of John Williams Gunnison], preface, illustrated, portraits, map of Gunnison's route of 1853 in inside back cover, chronology, index. Gunnison's mission was to travel through eastern Colorado and part of the Gunnison country into the territory of Utah to find a route for a railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. His contributions in this regard were invaluable to the emigrants that followed and to those interested in the building of a transcontinental railroad. He was murdered in Utah Territory in 1853 during a massacre by Indians. Covers lightly soiled and minor rubbing to the corners else a near fine, tight copy.
