Gunnison's mission was to travel through eastern Colorado and part of the Gunnison country into the territory of Utah to find a route for a railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. His contributions in this regard were invaluable to the emigrants that followed and to those interested in the building of a transcontinental railroad. He was murdered in Utah Territory in 1853 during a massacre by Indians. Covers lightly soiled and minor rubbing to the corners else a near fine, tight copy.
