John Finerty, Chicago Times war correspondent, who accompanied General George Crook's forces during the Great Sioux War of 1876. Finerty was actually in the field with the Army and reported firsthand on the campaign, including the Battle of the Rosebud, the Battle of Slim Buttes, and the Army's movements and encounters throughout the northern Plains. Finerty accompanied scouting parties in the field and describes the dangers, hardships and uncertainty involved in searching for and locating Native American forces.
