First edition. 8vo. Review copy with slip laid-in. Blue pictorial cloth, titles and illustration in black on the front cover and spine, map of Texas on the front and rear endpapers, xi [blank], 257 pp., frontispiece, preface, acknowledgments, illustrated, portraits, appendices, index.
The original Milam County Grant included what are now 53 counties in central and west central Texas. There is information on the Indians, Friars, the early empresarios who initiated settlement, and events from the “Republic Period” to the mid-century. The ranching material includes a discussion of the county’s first three ranchers in the 1860’s, Texas Fever, and conversion of lignite plant properties into large cattle operations in the 1950’s. This is a well-researched book with text notes showing a great deal of reliance on primary sources.
Fine bright copy in bright dust jacket with trivial wear to the head of spine. Attractive copy.
