Publication: Great Western Despatch, 1883, N P

Softcover. 104 pages. Tight binding; pages mostly pretty clean but first and last few pages have stains along edges; Stamped #34 registered agent on front endpaper; extra codes written in blank spaces on several pages; 1884 letter from general manager H.R. Duval, the compiler of the book, tipped in to rear endpaper. A very scarce telegraphic cipher book for use by registered agents of the Great Western Despatch, Erie & Pacific Despatch and South Shore Line. Only a few were printed. This one is for agent #34. A super interesting book with all the codes used by agents to protect their clients' interests. For example "Sedentary" means the property has arrived, "shunt" means it's raining hard, "shutters" means weather clear and cold, "tinfoil" means 36 cents per, and "turmoil" means Boston, just to name a few. VERY SCARCE ORIGINAL TELEGRAPHIC CODE BOOK W/LETTER FROM GENERAL MANAGER. Edges of covers are worn from regular use, small old water stain to the top edges of the rear endpapers, front endpapers are soiled, internally clean and tight for a good copy.
