The book is divided into six sections, The Florida War 1836-1842, Louisiana-Texas 1843-1844, The War With Mexico 1845-1848, California, Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Utah 1848-1860, War of "The Rebellion" 1861-1866, and Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana 1866-1875. The Second Cavalry saw action in the Seminole War, the Mexican War, on the plains in Texas, New Mexico, etc. on the way to California, during the Utah Expedition, the Civil War, Indian battles in Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana, The Kidder Affair, Custer in the Civil War section, the Fetterman Massacre, the Noyes Expedition, the Piegan Expedition, Yellowstone Expeditions, and much more. The frontispiece contains the eight portraits of officers of the Second Dragoons. A comprehensive appendix contains battles of the regiment, military records of officers, roll of honor, and orders, reports of operations, and correspondence. This book is from the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy.

Spine is lightly sunned and signatures have been resewn making for a tight, bright and near fine copy. Housed in an attractive full leather clamshell case with maroon cloth sides, the entire inside is lined in white linen, raised bands and titles stamped in gilt on the spine. A cornerstone of any cavalry collection. There may be another copy as nice as this one, but none is better.
