8 1/2" x 5 1/2" in color pictorial wrappers. 12 pp. plus wrappers, unpaginated, illustrations, map, diagram. The Fountain Paint Pot is a mud pot located in the Lower Geyser basin in Yellowstone National Park. It is named for the reds, yellows and browns of the mud in this area. The differing colors are derived from oxidation states of the iron in the mud. As with all hot springs, the heat in the caldera forces pressurized water up through the ground, which is expelled here. Also, rising gasses cause the bubbling action. The half mile Fountain Paint Pot Nature Trail offers various hydro-thermal features that are expressions of Yellowstone's volcanism. This booklet is meant to explain things along the way such as hot springs, paint pots, steam vents, algae, the Volcanic tableland, various geysers, etc. Inside front cover is a map of the trail, showing the locations of various geysers. Minimal wear to the extremities. Very good plus. Very interesting and informative booklet.
