The book spans the history of Fort Stanton, New Mexico, from its establishment as a U.S. Army post in 1855 through its many subsequent incarnations ... military, hospital, internment camp, state facility. It details key eras to include the frontier cavalry period, the Indian wars (particularly against the Mescalero Apaches), the fort's role in the Lincoln County War era, the transition to a tuberculosis and Merchant Marine hospital, use during WWII as an internment site, and post-war uses including state hospital and prison.
