It discusses such figures as Zebulon Pike, Stephen H. Long, Jedediah Smith, John C. Frémont, Kit Carson, John Wesley Powell, John Rutherford Walker, Charles Wilkes, William H. Emory, Joseph Christmas Ives, Gouverneur K. Warren who led expeditions for the Corps of Topographical Engineers and was a masterful cartographer who prepared the first scientifically and comprehensive map of the trans-Mississippi West, and others.
