First edition. Cloth, 210pp., illustrations. An excellent and important biography of this often-overlooked explorer and fur trader of the early Canadian and American wilderness. Donald Mackenzie was a member of the overland expedition to Astoria and remained there until 1814. In 1819 through 1821, he was instrumental in opening the rich Snake River country to the fur trade. From 1823-1833 Mackenzie was involved in the development of the important Red River district, eventually serving as Governor of the Red River colony. A very important contributor to the early fur trade development of the Oregon Country. Ex-library copy of the Nebraska State Historical Society with no external markings, and two stamped imprints on front free-endpaper and library bookplate on front pastedown. Some very slight edge wear, else a fine, bright copy.
