Cloth, [4], 384 [4] pp., foreword, preface, illustrated, plates, maps, notes, bibliography, index. During the period between 1750 and 1850 there were thirty-five Indian nations living on the Great Plains. During this time there was a profusion of splendid ceremonies, costumes and regalia the world has ever seen. The greater part of these by far were directly associated with the warrior societies, civil societies, and cults. It is the societies and cults that are examined with skill and perception, in this fascinating and handsome book. Mails, with thoroughness and detail, discusses the ceremonies, regalia, and clothing of the societies of these tribes. Unlike many writers, he focuses not only on the major tribes but on the smaller ones, as well, like the Oto and Omaha. Showing great detail and extensive research, this is a must for anyone interested in plains tribes. It is further enhanced by 174 drawing and eight color reproduction of oil paintings all done by author. Encyclopedic in scope, it is, to date, the ultimate work on the subject. Fine, bright copy in two identical original dust jackets of which the outer jacket is sunned on the spine. The inner dust jacket has small tears at spine and at the flap (all have been closed with acid-free archival tape). The back panel exhibits some creasing. Overall a fine copy in a very good dust jacket.
