First edition thus, 8vo. Originally published in 1877 by the Government Printing Office. Printed wrappers, iv [1], 124 pp., prefatory note, preface, numerical index, addendum. The catalogue prepared by W. H. Jackson presents the subjects of the pictures that represents an acceptable contribution to anthropological literature. "Hayden writes in the Prefatory Note that, 'the collection of photographic portraits of North American Indians described in the following catalogue is undoubtedly the largest and most valuable one extant. It has been made at great labor and expense, during a period of about 25 years, and now embraces over 1000 negatives, representing no less than twenty-five tribes....its value for ethnological purposes cannot be over-estimated.' The catalogue records 1094 photographs taken by Jackson in the course of his work as expedition photographer for the U.S. Geological Survey, providing details of 'all the information we have been able to obtain of the various individuals and scenes represented' and thus offers much historical information as well as an important reference for Native American photographs."
