The murder of a shepherd whose body was found in a sheep hut near the little Australian town of Merino, and would have been written off as an unsolved mystery if Inspector Bonaparte hadn't noticed something peculiar about a photograph of the hut in which the body was found. He contrived to have himself put at the job of painting the police-yard fence, and from this vantage point, picked up information that helped him fit the pieces of the puzzle together.
