Publication: Indiana University Press, 1958, Bloomington
First edition. Cloth, 190pp., frontispiece. A Rocky Mountain trapper in the 1840's, 1850's, and 1860's, John Johnson returned to his cabin in 1847 to find his Indian wife and unborn child had been killed by Crow Indians in his absence. Vowing a vengeance on the entire Crow nation, Johnson eventually killed 300 Crow warriors, scalped them, and ate their livers. Through patient research, the authors relate the story that some say served as the basis for the movie, "Jeremiah Johnson". A near fine copy. Dust jacket is rubbed, with chipping to spine ends, and a lightly sunned spine.
