Publication: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1990, New York
First edition. Signed by the author on the half title page, and with a full-color original signed drawing by Navajo artist Ernest Franklin that shows both Leaphorn and Chee, along with the title animal, a coyote on the verso of the dedication page, plus another original color drawing by Franklin of a rattlesnake. Jim Chee's friend, fellow policeman Delbert Nez, is killed, and a drunken Navajo shaman is found with the murder weapon in his hand. The shaman neither confesses to nor denies the crime. Soon Leaphorn and Chee unravel a complex plot of death involving an historical find, a lost fortune ... and the mythical Coyote --- always waiting, and always hungry. Fine bright copy in dust jacket and housed in the original cloth slipcase.
