First edition thus. Originally published in 1880 as The Fifth Cavalry in the Sioux War. Republished in 1890 with some changes as Campaigning With Crook. 12mo. Dark blue pictorial cloth, title stamped in gold on front cover and spine, v [5], 295 pp. preface, frontispiece (portrait), illustrated. Exciting, vividly told story of The Big Horn and Yellowstone Expedition in 1876, against the Sioux and Cheyenne. Graff 2326 says, "According to ARMY AND NAVY JOURNAL, October 11, 1890, p. 107, this issue was called in by the publishers at the demand of Reuben D. Davenport....who claimed certain statements in Chapter 25 (15, actually) were libelous. The volume was re-issued in 1891 under an 1890 date line and a retraction was published." This copy is 1891 second printing, with the changes referenced above. A near fine, clean, bright copy. Signed presentation from "The Author" in Capt. King's distinct handwriting and style.
